STAG The stag symbolized piety and purity (Ps. 42:1). This nimble animal wandered in high mountains, so it also typified solitude. EXAMPLE: Stags and Birds, Arundel Psalter, illuminated manuscript page by unknown artist, fourteenth century. British Library, London, England. Medieval people lived close to nature, so animals and vegetation often appeared in the borders of sacred texts. At the bottom of a page in this psalter, the illuminator posed a stag in the woods, representing purity and piety.

UNICORN The white unicorn, a mythical animal, stood for purity, Christ, or the Virgin Mary. The Christian interpretation evolved from a myth that a unicorn couldn’t be tamed or caught until it lay in the lap of a virgin and fell asleep. EXAMPLE: The Lady and the Unicorn: Sight, tapestry by unknown artist, fifteenth century. Museum of the Middle Ages, Paris, France. Part of a series about the senses, this tapestry probably communicated Christ’s and Mary’s purity when a unicorn knelt before a virgin and a peaceable lion stood nearby.
